Ellen DeGeneres was taken aback by Caitlyn Jenner's view on same-sex marriage, which the talk-show host discussed with Howard Stern on his SiriusXM show Tuesday.
Jenner was a guest on the season premiere of The Ellen DeGeneres Show that same day, and in a pre-taped interview, the former Olympian called herself a "traditionalist," who was against same-sex marriage originally, but is now "OK with it."
"I'm older than most people in the audience, and I kind of like tradition, you know, and it's always been a man and a woman," Jenner said. But the 65-year-old followed with the fact that she would not stand in the way of anyone's happiness.
"If that word 'marriage' is really, really that important to you, I can go with it," Jenner said.
DeGeneres is married to actress Portia De Rossi.
DeGeneres and Stern attempted to wrap their heads around the "confusing" comments.
"She still has a judgment about gay marriage," DeGeneres said of Jenner. "And I said, 'You're wanting people to understand and accept you … and you still have a judgment about gay people and marriage.' "
Stern called the idea of Jenner's outlook "crazy."
"Here's a person on TV crying, 'I want to be myself, I want to be genuine, I don't want people to ridicule me' and then says in the same breath, 'Gee, gay marriage, I don't get it,' " Stern said. "It's remarkable."
Despite Jenner's outlook, DeGeneres said the pair had a great interview and she was grateful Jenner appeared on the show, even if questions remain.
"I don't really know her, and I'm trying to understand it because I don't fully understand it either, but I also want everyone to be happy," DeGeneres said. "But I don't fully understand all of that, but I want her to be happy, which is what I want for her for me."
"Here's a person on TV crying, 'I want to be myself, I want to be genuine, I don't want people to ridicule me' and then says in the same breath, 'Gee, gay marriage, I don't get it,' " Stern said. "It's remarkable."
I agree with both of them
I love(d) cait but she's still so incredibly ignorant, surprising because you'd think she would've became more empathetic and educated regarding the subject
Yeah Caitlyn shouldn't have said what she said but this site suddenly becoming borderline transphobic the minute she did is questionable.
Don't be silly. Talking about ONE case =/= being transphobic.
It's like when people say that some celebs only claim they're bisexual for attention. How come you guys don't freak out over that but choose to put Caitlyn/Bruce on a pedestal? So far I've seen nothing but evidence that "Caitlyn" was a money scheme and I actually watch the show.
