People love a good comeback. His fans also never abandoned him and he's making songs that isnt targeted to younger demographics. I never really doubted he would continue on the same success he had before.
Also like said above, the public is very fickle. Look at people like Miley or Gaga. The public loves to raise them up then tear them down over and over. He might go back to being hated for a while, then people will forget and start to love him again
