We (the US) is still really a "free" country. Anyone who truly pays attention to what goes on in the US realizes how far we have traveled since 9/11 toward fascism and authoritarianism. And the trend continues to accelerate.
Why else would the US have dropped to 49th (and still falling) in Press Freedom (Reporters Without Borders, almost out of the Top 20 in economic freedom, Congress passing Patriot Act, Indefinite Detention and Military Tribunals just for people suspected of terrorism (and terrorists consist of a lot more than just suicide bombers if you look at the FBI's guide for "suspicious persons"), and the leader of the NSA lobbying before Congress he should be granted access to everyone's phone and internet records regardless of what we do or the friends that we make.
Yeah calling and/or believing the US is still a "free" country is nothing more than a myth, and that won't change until both sides of the political duopoly are voted out of power.
