I wasn't a fan of Katy (or pop music in general ) at the time so the only time I really heard it for the first time was when my school entered the "Roar" competition. I loved the song because I felt like I could relate it to my freshman year () but I never expected it to be so big.
Disappointed. She actually managed to out child-pander/disney herself from TD. Especially after she said she was aiming for the opposite. I also wanted the chorus to hit harder, seemed like the only hook was just the ro-ar oar oar part. But then it got very stuck in my head and I remember playing the lyric video over and over. To this day the iPhone ring at the beginning of it still brings me back to 2013. I think I watched the awful video twice total.
I thought it was too girly and the lyrics were meaningless, and they kind of are (not pop ICON Bonnie McKee's best work) what with the "I went from zero to my own hero" kinda rubbish, but then the music video came along and was obviously really fun, bright, colourful, and just unashamedly over-the-top, which I guess it what draws people to Katy, and yeah then I knew how it was gonna work.
Oh yeah and then I was pressed about it beating "Applause".
Came back from holiday and logged on my laptop and saw it had just leaked about an hour ago. Listened and immediately thought of Brave which I'd already played hundreds of times, but thought it was a bop.
