Debut album sells 13 million copies world wide, second album struggles to sell 6 million copies worldwide with 10x the amount of promo and appearances.
Same thing happened to my other artist but with singles. 5 consecutives #1's in the US, follow up goes to #27 and the rest can't chart. I am not here for two hasbeens. The decline is real.

Release the album in either Feb, June, July, October /November and Dec. It also depends on the theme of the album and trends. My main artists uses darkness theme which sells great in summer.
