Because you need to start looking at this more holistically. Since a song is often an appendage of the album (I can see how a few of the girls in this thread might currently be confused by this principle!) to interpret the success of one requires a dip into the other.

"Shake It Off" had weeks of negative sales that need to be looked at to determine it's overall commercial performance. By extension "Blank Space" would need similar attention.

My point is that "cultural impact" is a slippery adjective that can be applied to just about anything without a clear way to falsify it. Thus when discussing which songs are "bigger" I think it's best to just stick with the numbers.
