I wonder what Poland will say now. Earlier them, Slovakia, Czech Republic said they won't bend on the issue. I know many Czechs are atheists, but isn't Poland one of the most religious in the area (more likely to listen to the Pope's words)?

The Vatican doesn't pay tax since it is a sovereign city-state. Catholic clergies, though, like all religious ministers do pay income, sales, excise, and other taxes in the cities, counties, states, and countries in which they live.

And the Catholic Church is the biggest provider of non-governmental education and healthcare services in the world. They don't have a lot of cash just lying around.
