I think many gay men act that way as a defense mechanism. I also think stereotypical "gay culture" sort of promotes this hedonistic lifestyle that focuses on vanity (e.g. having a good body, a wild party life, expensive fashion sense) and discourages "traditional" things like settling down and getting married and having a family, being religious, etc. so it often appears many gay men are kinda living just for themselves.
