Hist article is basically your typical ATRL/etc SJW think-piece in which he tells of the evil white man who goes around "appropriating cultures", which is what he says the VMA's are all about. When people of colour speak about cultural appropriation and racism in general it's ignorant to dismiss what they have to say, laugh at them and call them a "social justice warrior" when they're just trying to point out the systematic inequalities in popular culture. Instead of guffawing and pulling the victim card whenever white supremacy is called out, read the criticism and question whether you are contributing or perpetuating to the problem.

Except it's true - people of colour, black people in this case, have consistently discussed the inappropriateness of cultural appropriation. Black scholars have written books about this and black people in general have a distaste to non-blacks accessorising their culture.

White culture can't be appropriated because it's assimilation - people of colour assimilate "whiteness" to avoid unfair mockery and mistreatment. For example:



Protective hairstyles worn by black women are banned in the military. Dreadlocks are classed as "unprofessional". There is nothing limiting whiteness, and thus it can't be appropriated.
