You have a point there, and I agree, but what about the pop tarts that only "sing" about love, sex, and partying? How can anyone connect with that disposable garbage when it's pretty obvious it was made by some corporate overlord for some quick cash and chose a pretty face to sell the product?

Oh, I definitely see that, but I don't think someone being the writer of the words presented isn't automatically an indication of something genuinely felt or experienced. Like, of course the attractive assembly line pop singers that are just used as marketing vehicles to sell usually aren't genuine, but they don't represent ALL singers that don't write any or all of their songs. I just can't subscribe to this hard rule some people stick to of disregarding all or the majority that don't write as somehow less genuine than those that do. Writing alone is just not a qualifier or disqualifier to me for what is and isn't real.
Now as far as how people connect to music I guess it means different things to different people. It's total emotional immersion and catharsis for some and complete escapism and mental vacation for others where most are somewhere in the middle and use music for both reasons at different times. Hence why there's even a market for the pretty people with no real musical talent and nothing to say to begin with.
