I remember one professional was asked about this and they said their theory was the "I just want to be a part of something" mentality, like a clique. There was even a slang word in UK for gays who wanted to become infected, I don't remember it.

This is shocking to say the least...

I once met someone whose friend almost definitely purposely got HIV. His friend never expounded but his theory was that his friend was so scared of getting HIV that he decided to just go ahead and get it, so he wouldn't have to worry about getting it anymore. I guess the fear of getting the disease was worse than actually getting it? Very strange.

I believe "gifting" is the term used to refer to its reverse: people who intentionally try to give others HIV, sometimes without the other person's knowledge. This is far more disturbing, though rare to my knowledge.

Unfortunately it's not as rare as you might think. I came across a forum a few months ago (think I did see a bug chasing related post on here actually that made me think of it) and anyway it was awful, so, so disturbing - full of 'gifters' wanting to give HIV to both willing and unwilling people...

It's terrifying.
