That is so funny you mentioned that. I have a friend, Will Smith, I know, he worked at a Ford vendor he was not a mechanical engineer but he often was tasked to machine custom tools. Before he knew he was doing everything a ME was doing and was getting almost paid the same. He was offered to go to school, paid for by he company, to get his degree.
Things might be harder, I don't know, I don't trust ThinkProgress, I need their data sets.
All I know is if you are smart, prepared and confident you should have a good chance of landing a job. I used a recruiter out of school because I didn't know how to prepare or carry myself in an interview for a career level job.
They told me things like don't just bring a pad and paper but have it in a nice flip open carrier and don't forget a pen, never say 'I don't know', there are a lot of little things that can improve your chances or sink you in a job interview. There are even power positions for you hands when you talk that will effect their option of you. You might think it's all nonsense but I am telling you now when I go in to a meeting to deal with a customer for a big contract, I read them and I use all these tools to my advantage.
