AKB48 are closer to being a record label than they are a musical act. They have four teams of 24, a group of trainees, multiple sister groups, etc. There's always about 200 girls to pick from and stan for and they also have teams dedicated to performing in theaters, most notably Akihabara theater (hence AKB) where you can see the girls perform daily and develop a personal relationship (they have plenty of handshake events).
