Pitchfork just reviewed Badlands and gave it a sad 4.9 rating. The same thing they gave to Ryn Weaver's The Fool.











But which album is better ATRL? Does Pitchfork lie?

Both are amazing. Pitchfork is trash and you know it.

I think Halsey's album deserves more than a 4.9...she's new and has potential. I really do like her.

But apart of me feels like her writing is TOTALLY inauthentic. She just turned 20 and grew up as a middle class One Direction stan who spent all her life on Tumblr and she's writing about sleeping around, being homeless, traveling the world, doing drugs, etc? Then when interviewed about it she changes her story every time.

That's why I don't like how she is being compared to Lana/Marina/Lorde/Florence/Sky.

Their music and their writing is authentic and describes their actual experiences, whereas I feel like Halsey banked off of a tumblr trend. She's a really sweet girl but I just expect her to be more real.

Not gonna name names, but not all of those celebrities are "authentic" in their writing either.

Hell, even Lorde has a few lines which aren't true, like when she said she was getting on her first plane.

AMEN. So many female artists copy Lana and try to get away with it.

Sky is authentic and that's why Pitchfork named her debut one of the best of the decade and 2 of her songs in the top 100 songs of the decade as well

The Fool is my favorite album of the year. Badlands is cute but nothing insanely special.

Even in terms of personality, singles, lyrics, etc. - Ryn wins.

I really enjoy Ryn's music.

Very true. Overall though, you see imagery of the artists lives' when you listen to their albums. You see flashes of their life. Certain lines may not be 100% true or they may be metaphorical, but overall I feel like AT LEAST Lana / Lorde / Florence speak truths through their music. I think they put their writing first then their music second.

It isn't just Halsey lyrics, it's the entire album. I just don't see anything. I still like it, I just think she lies to sound more interesting too often and puts big words that don't have any meaning in her songs.
