Japan is ultra conservative, and it really is a country that has only bothered to be open globally in the last 150 years, and continues to resist western trends as much as possible, so tbh they're on the right track.

"Politically questionable means" - How was it politically questionable? The majority of the U.S. population supports gay marriage and the number rises significantly each year so it's not like it's misrepresentation. It was efficient but it was by no means "questionable."
Japan may be on the right track, but while the rest of Europe/North America/South America pass legislation to further gay rights, Japan has done next to nothing and the gay rights movement is almost non-existent. If you compare gay rights in the West from 20, even 10, years ago, the difference is night and day. In Japan, there really hasn't been much of a change despite them being a major world leader.
