Someone very close to me who is Japanese (and gay) used to tell me this all the time. He didn't even come out for a long time until he first came to the states and saw how much more visible being gay is here because it's such a taboo there.

Why are people coming for Japan when ya'll know Western countries are just as bad? I'm from New Zealand and I know I sure as hell was bullied 24/7. That being said, culturally it is terrible not to be conformist in Japan so anything that sticks out is bad. One of their most famous sayings in Japan is "The nail that sticks out gets hammered." (in Japanese obvi)

Because they haven't made as much progress as the Western countries despite being just as developed if not more. Duh.

I know gay doesn't equal feminine, but I just find it strange how they are accepting of males stepping outside of gender stereotypes/roles, which could be seen as more progressive than other countries, yet they're not accepting of alternate sexualities like other countries are

That's because homophobia is different everywhere. There's often misogyny involved in homophobia here in the west and disgust with men taking "feminine" roles (not to mention the religious angle), but that's not the case everywhere. For some people it's just discomfort or even disgust with deviating from "normal" societal expectations to marry a woman, have children, etc.

Considering USA only just legalized gay marriage, and via politically questionable means, let's not act like it hasn't got a LOT of progress to go.

Japan is ultra conservative, and it really is a country that has only bothered to be open globally in the last 150 years, and continues to resist western trends as much as possible, so tbh they're on the right track.
