I live in Asia and i don't even know who she is. Asia is more than just East Asia (Japan, China, South Korea). But if she really wants to make it big, i wish all the best for her.

She has good intentions, but the issue is quite complicated and her statement will probably do her more harm than good.

Koda Kumi, Ayumi Hamasaki, Namie Amuro, BoA, HyunA, and Lee Hyori all say hello. All strong female artists that have had more impact in Japan and/or South Korea than CL has had in South Korea.

Urgh you miss the point, all those artists despite being 'strong' female artists, conform to cultural social standards (but like someone else here has pointed out this is an issue everywhere), they're cute to look at and have princess like mannerism. I would like to see a female artist like Miley in Asia so kids know that even idols can be unconventional and look different to challenge the status quo, I like the direction CL is heading because she's a little more tomboyish and out there - baby steps.

I'm eastern asian who happens to live in the UK sunshine. I've visited Asia, I've seen the effects of patriarchy firsthand in my family, have you?

No, it's a pan-Asian trait. Shy, innocent, timid, quiet and obedient are valued traits on women and even men too.
|
that happens a lot. When people think of Asians they only refer to East Asian ones. There's just as many Asians in the South-East but they're ignored.

But it's the truth though? She may not have worded it in the best way, but what she said about the way females are expected to act in many Asian cultures is 100% correct. She's not blaming the women for being submissive, she's just pointing it out. In fact, some of you guys are doing more harm than good by writing her comments off as pretentious and pretending that women aren't treated that way.
If any celeb right now is qualified to speak on how Asian women are treated in Asian culture, it would be an Asian woman like CL tbh.

Well, Nepalis definitely aren't the poster child of progressive behavior in comparison.

That's a North American thing and she's pandering to that misconception. I guess it's because saying she's an Asian superstar sounds better than saying she's a South Korean superstar. The latter sounds less impressive.

Clearly you haven't visited enough? Not firsthand experience with your family. You really need to visit more families then and yes, I practically have lived all my life in asia, haven't you?
