The anime always revolves around selling merch. Thats why ash always ends up using bulbasuar and oshawatt in gyms and leagues for the whole series, when everyone else is using 3rd stage pokemon.
Gen 6 is lucky that more last stage pokemon are iconic like Talonflame and Greninja or ash would still be running around with Fletchinder and Frokie
