Do you find this to be true?
I know many people on ATRL say many albums, from many popular artists at the moment, sound dated now. Does that mean their music wasn't actually that good?

Not necessarily. A song can be a product of its time and be amazing, yet still sound dated when the trend it latched on to or trail blazed is inevitably over. The two are largely unrelated.

I don't get why 'dated' is a bad thing.

Like for example I often see people say 'The Fame' sounds dated. But it sounded fresh back in the day. Just because that type of music got overplayed doesn't mean the fame isn't a good record.

Everything sounds dated at some point.

That means the song is timeless, Not necessarily good/bad

I don't really agree, they have songs from the past that definitely have elements from the certain era in music the song was created in, and one can tell it is from that era by certain aspects of the song, however, if it's good, I wouldn't say its "dated" and not listen to it.

Doesn't make any sense to me. Most of Madonna's older songs sound very retro now, same could be said about most of Michael Jackson's songs. That doesn't make them any less good, they're just distinctive of their time.

That being said, "good" or "bad" is a topic that's based on opinions so this thread will go nowhere.

I completely agree. I hate when people say "dated". Like ok, that doesn't make it bad though? I'd rather have a dated song than a **** one...

You could argue the same for bad music.

I totally believe this to be true. There are a lot of songs out there that I enjoyed listening to them when they came out. But after some time, I never listen to them anymore. Timeless to me means that I still want to listen to it 5 years later. Thats the difference between a good and a bad song - "STAYING POWER."
