Today marks the 10 year anniversary of the costliest hurricane in US history. Katrina was a Category 5 storm and at one point reached a peak intensity of 175 mph, the third most intense hurricane in history. After making landfall in New Orleans, it destroyed the levee systems designed to keep the water out of the city, and flooded 80% of the city. RIP to all those lives lost

I was on vacation in Florida and experienced some of it.

I went to New Orleans two years ago on a service trip and the damage that is still there is absolutely ridiculous, and is the same reason why I hate Bush, and am anti-government. Makes me sick how New Orleans is seen as a party city and a fun place, when in reality there is still thousands of damaged houses and hundreds of plots of land empty. It's so sad.

I was on vacation in Arizona when the levis broke. All I remember from the trip was pushing my mom into a pool because I was mad and then her threatening to beat my ass. Then watching people stranded on the top of house on the hotel tv and not knowing why.

The damage really was done on the 29th (i.e the levees breaking), so the anniversary here will be that day.

I'm from New Orleans and just began my senior year. I evacuated to Baton Rouge before going to Jacksonville, Florida for four months until I returned back to N.O. in January. Such a horrific moment in my life, and it's crazy that it has already been ten years.

So sad.

That's funny. I'm also from the New Orleans area, Metairie actually and I also moved to Jacksonville. But that was about two years before Katrina hit.

I'm lucky that I avoided the storm along with all of my family and extended family that made it out safely. I can't say the same for the hundreds and thousands of New Orleanians that lost their lives and I hope they get the peace they deserve.

The city, though, did make a pretty nice comeback and it's booming more than it was before so I'm happy I moved back. But, it's evident that the city is funneling a lot of funds into the beautification of wealthier and increasingly whiter neighborhoods like Marigny, The Bywater and Uptown while neglecting some of the more blighted areas like the Ninth Ward and Central City.

You are so right. I still don't see the need for that new streetcar line going down St. Claude/Rampart. It seems they do everything for the tourists.

They really do and they should be diverting those funds to covering up potholes and providing more stable public transit for people, especially in the neighborhoods I mentioned (and both of those use to have streetcar lines too!)

They filled some of the potholes in my neighborhood just about a month ago. It looks like the holes are coming back.

It's funny how on topics about Katrina, they always talk about the Lower 9th, which is probably its most neglected area post-Katrina (along with New Orleans East).

I didn't know how they did it for Superbowl/Mardi Gras two years ago, but they managed.

Stuff like this will happen more and more and worse since no one is doing anything to stop climate change.

Not hurricane-related, but this reminds me that in my town they shut down an entire section for maintenance for months but only fixed one street The incompetence I swear.

It's been ten years, I think the place has been rebuilt already?

Being the weather fanatic, I am, I remember watching footage of it on TWC.



To think that was back when TWC was a really good channel to watch.



I remember how ****ed up FEMA was with getting out help. And I remember my elementary school having a fundraiser for the victims.
