Basically the dust from the attacks were toxic. And many survivors including firemen are dying of illness like cancer because of it.
Well the first 40ish floors of the twin towers were built containing asbestos and on 9/11 all of that was released into the air, so that's the root cause of 9/11 related illnesses.
