The timeline of this story doesn't even make since. First off why would he force MTV to call him that and not the other channels it premiered on?And why only television too, why not when announcing him at award shows or to magazines too? When Elizabeth Taylor called him the King Of Pop, that was in 1989 before anything in either of these stories came up. So if the media did run with it it was because Elizabeth Taylor did it first and it had a ring to it, not because he dubbed himself that name. The article from the book you posted stated that he sat down with his publicist and came up with the nickname, why would he have to come up with the name if people were already calling him that? Also if he wanted to start pushing the name why did he wait until 1991, why didn't he do it in 1989 when Liz called him that, he was still the biggest star in the world? Believe the guys that wrote this or not i'm just saying the timeline doesn't make sense.
Also even before that he was already being referred to as the King of Pop during the Thriller era in the early 80s.

Lastly, in your first post you said "The Queen of Pop" is an honorific nickname because it's not a marketing tool. Even if MJ did press the nickname himself, you can see the media obviously didn't refuse. They would be fools to deny that he was infact that "the King of Pop." In the tons of interviews or videos i've seen of him i've never once heard him call himself the king of pop yet everytime you hear about him or read an article on him you hear "King of Pop." You see what happened when Rolling Stone tried to pull that crap a few years back by calling JT the King Of Pop and look what happened. Nobody has tried it with that title since. If anything "Queen of Pop" holds less significance because some new girl is being called the Queen of Pop every two years. Seriously google "Queen of Pop" and see how many different faces pop up vs "King of Pop." Either they are both marketing tools or both honorific titles but you can't have it both ways.
