The reason I carry now is due to some thug robbing us at gun point in Detroit with a cop 1 block away in sight of the whole thing as it went down. We went to the cop and he didn't do anything, he actually accused us of trying to buy drugs. This was many years ago. I didn't actually feel like I was going to get killed though, I just knew we were getting robbed and it sucked.
