I've noticed that a lot of members on ATRL talk about the pop singer with the most straight fans/ the most straight appeal / has the most amount of gay fans.

I find it to be internalised homophobia;

1. Often, pop singers who have a large gay fan base are criticised here for having one, and are deemed to be too weird / too "gay" for straight music consumers. The usual target for these kind of comments tend to be Gaga, as well as Britney, Madonna, Cher, and Kylie Minogue.

2. Singers who are deemed to have the most straight fans are put on a pedastel. People here act like a singer having an unproportionately high amount of gay fans is a bad thing.

My question is: does it actually matter if a pop star has a disproportionate number of fans who are gay etc? Why does ATRL care about whether pop stars have a lot of straight fans?

I think its just their way to make a popstar they don't like look niche. I'm not sure why this is a bad thing. In reality it doesn't matter, and its just great that these there's a population that connects with these popstars for whatever reason.

Well to point 1, that's kind of what a lot of people think not just Gays. Str8s have a bit of homophobia in them which is why they're not fans of eccentric artists like for instance, Gaga/Kylie. It doesn't really matter if an artist has a lot of gay fans if they're selling well, but as with any Pop star, targeting a general demographic can be shortsighted.

what it means is that a pop star can appeal to more than one demographic if they have a wider audience, maybe including straight guys. don't go preaching about internalized homophobia when it has nothing to do with that..

The 'Straight Friendly' thread from yesterday was beyond tragic. Bey and Lana stans RUNNING in that thread to try and shade Gaga & Britney by mocking the fact that they have a huge gay fanbase. Idk why people here think that having more gay fans is bad.

It is internalized homophobia. Most people who listen to top 40 radio are women/gays 13-25. Most "stans" of artist like Rihanna, Beyonce, Gaga, Katy etc are women/gays 13-25. I notice the Navy prides themselves on the fact that Rihanna has more straight male fans then the other girls , but what's the point if Beyonce, Gaga, Katy and other "gay artists are/were outgrossing and outselling her?

Rihanna has always had more straight male fans then Katy, Beyonce, and Gaga. Yet Rihanna has never been able to sell 6 million copies of a song like Katy/Gaga have. Rihanna has never grosses 200 million on tour like all three of them have. Rihanna's networth is lower than Gaga and Bey and around the same as Katy (who came out after her).

Her fans still brag about her "straight appeal" even though it's not making her any more successful than her rivals. Most straight men aren't going to buy these girls new albums, concert tickets, merchandise etc so the whole thing is kinda pointless.

Who cares our gay friendly bitches still have a successful career with achievements in multiple formats and pools filled with money our gay asses worked the **** out for just to give it 2 them the first second they released a lead
