He and Princess Diana were very close, then they had a falling out. Not long before she was killed, the two reconciled at one of his friend's funerals (a gay fashion designer murdered on his boat, Versache maybe?), and became very close friends again. So the song is very personal to him, as she was one of his best friends.

Also, he donated everything last bit of money raised from the sales of the song, at one point over $32 million, to the trust fund set up for Diana by her brother. However, her brother went a bit overboard, even putting labels on margerine containers, saying a portion of the money was going toward the trust fund. And there have been questions regarding the mismanagement of the trust fund too.

So these two reasons combined are why Elton John is so protective of "Candle In The Wind 1997."

Hey Jude will take time to catch up to, but Uptown Funk should get a boost from getting nominated (and hopefully winning some of the) five times at the VMAs (hopefully Mars will perform).

And UF should get boosts through the Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Year's Holiday Season. The difference between UF and HJ is larger than that between HJ and Happy, so he could get to #4 by early 2016.

Then he could overtake #3 & #2 eventually, but that'll take a lot longer. There are much bigger gaps there, and nothing much left to propell UF promotion wise for a while. Sweeping the Grammy's could make a dent in that gap though.

Pharrel kept promoting Happy even after 6 months from release so the song got a lot of boosts throughout 2014, UF is a different situation so I don't think it will surpass Hey Jude.

Yeah. It could've been an even bigger hit, but John felt like he had done enough. I thought John might re-release as a download in 2007 to mark the 10th anniversary of Diana's death, but he didn't.

UF is still in the Top 20 after 40 weeks though, with the VMAs, the AMAs, and the Christmas shopping season to keep it going strong. Also, when Bruno releases another album, UF will get a boost. I know his refusal to perform the song is frustrating, but he still will rise, so don't give up on your favorite singer/songwriter/musician/producer. I haven't done the comparison in a while, but UF was far higher in week 40 than either Happy or BL, even though those artists promoted those songs constantly. Maybe Bruno's trying not to push his song too much to keep it from burning out like both of the songs I mentioned above did with people.
