Demi and Nick are really close. Demi loves working with friends. e.g. she's already collabing with Iggy on this album right after they became friends. Is it so wrong to love the fact that they're supporting each other, especially now that they're business partners.

Bonus point: there are a lot of their fans who want to see them together, so this is a marketing boost for both of them.

To be honest, not only they're best friends, but also talented and understand each other musically.

And Safehouse records is a plus since they're also promoting their label. It's a win-win situation

He is not writing her full album, she has enough space to develop herself as songwriter and lyricist. Nick and Demi are friends, business partners and have mutual respect for eachother. Them working together is everything but a marketing gimmick. It just comes in handy that them together holds sentimental feelings and thoughts by both media and fans.

From what Nick said in an interview it's a side project with folky type music.
