The Chapel of Rest is to be installed in the Theatre La Latina in Madrid, where she had so many successes. Not only could she fill theatres and cinemas, she was also tremendously successful in television and became a world star in Spanish speaking countries.
She was born in Madrid, into a humble family, her father was a tailor and she worked with him as a girl on sewing military uniforms. This post-war period she always wanted to forget as she knew from a young age she wanted to be an artist on the stage. She was a frequent spectator in the nearby La Latina theatre where there is a plaque in her honour which is frequently photographed by her admirers.
Lina Morgan had become a rich woman and was able to make her dream come true by buying the La Latina theatre, where for years she was the only star. Apart from occasional failures she managed to keep each play on for several seasons.
Translated titles – The Tale of the Milk Lady, Pure Metallurgical, The Marine Calls You, What a pair of twins! and The Last Tramway.
She left the stage in 1993 with ‘Sky blue is not a colour’ after suffering a detached retina which eventually didn’t stop her returning to the stage.
The death of her brother, José Luis López, who was her friend, producer and manager, affected her deeply and proved to be an absence she would never get over.
No longer would she start her shows in La Latina with her catchphrase, ‘Grateful and excited I can only say thanks for coming’.
She will be remembered for being like Charlie Chaplin, who she held in great praise and wanted to be.
