A concept album tells a story, with a beginning, middle and end! It follows a certain storyline that is written before the songs, and the songs are inspired by it, thus, following that concept.

1. Why Not Me
The beginning. It starts with Mother Maiden's lament.

2. Shot In The Dark
The suffering of the sinner after dying and being sent to purge other sinners.

3. In The Middle Of The Night
The "revenge" song against the world.

4. Faster
The original sinner's lament to the new life path.

5. Fire And Ice
A song remembering what life was like before death.

6. Iron
Coming to terms with the devil inside.

7. Where Is The Edge
Facing other sinners and seeing they have much to live for, but are wasting time being evil.

8. Sinéad
Sinéad is one of the main characters of the story and one of the original sinners chosen to fight evil in the real world. This is her coming to terms with her own destiny.

9. Lost
Knowing Sinéad's presence is still haunting the real world and knowing she's alive in her dreams suffering.

10. Murder
The purge song. The original sinner's "hunting" song.

"I'm killing them all
I put my soul on the line
I purify sins
That I committed in life
I'll follow them all
And I'll be bringing them down"

11. A Demon’s Fate
Trying to escape the fate they were thrown into. The original sinners are tired of this hunt.

12. Stairway To The Skies
Finally acknologing the truth that they're dead and there is no way to come back to life.
Dreaming of a stairway to the skies.

This is a concept album. Not an album about trying to take back your ex or singing about "dancing until her body aches". No album by Christina, Britney, Taylor, Beyoncé or Katy are concept albums.

And the good thing is the lyrics are all written by the same people, Sharon, Robert and Daniel/Martijn.

Yes Within Temptation released The Unforgiving in 2011.

It's about the sinners who die and come back to life by the hand of Mother Maiden to punish other sinners as a sign of purging themselves of their sins.

And most of Epica's albums are tied to each other via "The Embrace that Smothers" and "A New Age Dawns" episodes. It's conceptual in the way their lyrics are all following a storyline across their albums, which is really cool.
