He basically said their female fans can't relate to the song because it's about a boy's feelings towards a girl. In other words, he forgot lesbians exist. I wouldn't say that makes him homophobic, but he does have a history of being mindless.

Honestly, his defensive reaction is more homophobic than his actual comment. His comment is more heteronormative than homophobic.
