Not to be intrusive, and you don't have to answer this if you don't want to, but do you have a family member or a family friend with special needs? I used to have a friend whose brother had Downs Syndrome and I didn't even realise how offensive it was (or how much it gets used) until I slipped up and used it in front of her, and she called me out on it.
