A Chicago man was arrested after a Madison police horse was struck in the backside early Saturday morning, according to a release from Madison police.
Police said The horse, Doc, was working with officers in a congested area in the 400 block of North Frances Street at 2 a.m. on special enforcement for “Hippie Christmas” when an officer on foot saw Doc suddenly lurch forward.
Doc’s partner said there was a loud slap on Doc's "left rump area." It sounded "like a 2 x 4 hitting him and many individuals around us gasped when they heard it," the mounted officer said.
The officer on foot and the officer on Doc both spotted a suspect and caught him after a short chase.
Nathaniel C. Robinson, 21, Chicago, told police that he didn’t know it was illegal to slap a horse.
He was arrested on suspicion of harassment of police and fire animals and resisting arrest.
