UPDATED: Universal Pictures is offering to reimburse theaters for the costs of extra security for this weekend’s launch of “Straight Outta Compton,” sources have confirmed to Variety.

A Universal spokesperson said the studio is partnering with exhibitors who have requested support for their locations but could not comment on the issue of reimbursement, first reported by Wall Street Journal.

“Universal is proud of our association with ‘Straight Outta Compton,’ which portrays the rise of five talented young men from underprivileged and oppressed backgrounds into one of the most influential music groups in modern history,” the spokesperson said.

“The film has been seen by thousands of people at hundreds of screenings, all of which have happened without incident. The studio has not solicited enhanced security for theaters who will begin showing it this weekend, but has partnered with those exhibitors who have requested support for their locations.”

Why? Did I miss a shooting or something?

Because the film touches the topic of Police Brutality and they don't want to be slandered. So they're going to up security and increase the tension even more, making it into a bigger thing than it should be. Smart idea I say.

It's probably a good idea tbh. If it helps prevent even one person from the possibility of getting shot or injured then it's more than worth it.

Then up security to prevent mass shootings in general. What purpose for this film?

I think it's just because of the sad idea that a whole mix of people will see this movie because of its roots, and I guess that includes people that are kind of "riff raff"

This. Like, I know we all wanna jump at the idea that there's some racist intention behind this (and there very well may be, idk), but let's not pretend like certain movies don't attract certain types of people. This movie's target audience has a much broader pool of interest, which includes troublemakers. As we've seen in the past, big releases can attract a bad crowd. And it's not just "movies targeted at minorities". See: The Dark Knight shooting.

If the theaters feel like they may need the extra security then let them do what they need to do. I don't see a reason to get fussy over a venue trying to protect its customers, even if their motives may seem veiled to you.

I can't speak for all, but the theatre chain I work at (largest in U.S.) upped security immediately following the latest shootings. Local news outlets have mistakenly reported it as a response to Straight Outta Compton, but we literally had it the day after the shooting.
