Racists often generalize and stereotype other races and consistently put them down. They also hate others simply because of their skin colour. Here's an example of a racist person below:

humans fear those who are different from ourselves. you can control it but the fear will always be there even tho it's a tiny tiny bit. myself, i didn't notice people's race/skin colour before i turned 9/10 years old yet no one told me about race/racism.

That's a part of it, but I don't agree that racism wouldn't exist if we eliminated it right now. People develop preconceived notions independently of their upbringing all the time, hell, even I have. While prejudices aren't the same as being racist, they certainly can lead in that direction.

Maybe the way they were raised, or an experience they've had in life. In Europe it's rare to find someone who doesn't hate gypsies, for example.
