The very idea that he had to do that...how traumatic of an experience that must of been, and people still wonder why some kill themselves over their sexual orientation.
What? That's just a very generic insult. It's not like they could have known. He could've just brushed it off.
Knowing sports culture in the south, it's probably because he wasn't doing a bunch of chicks that they probably had a very strong clue. Or a "friend" could have let it slip.
