That Rolling Stone list doesn't strike me as sexist. The music industry is sexist. Historically, male artists vastly outnumber female artists. Even now, the ratio is something like 70% to 30%, and considering behind-the-scenes work like songwriting and engineering and producing, it's more like 90% to 10%.

If you look at the most successful artists, male-led acts (sans acts like Elvis, who came before the Beatles, which was a different climate altogether) tend to write and be known for writing their own music--Beatles, Elton John, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, etc. Successful women--Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Olivia Newton-John, Diana Ross, Connie Francis, Brenda Lee, Dionne Warwick, Linda Ronstadt, etc.--are known for being vocalists or products. None of those women wrote their songs.

By male vs. female representation, the list seems in line with the ratio of male to female songwriters historically, not to mention that the small number of female musicians are probably historically further disadvantaged by an inability to both acquire the resources to record music and take creative risks.

I don't feel critics are obliged to skew praise in favor of inferior female works just to inflate female representation in a sexist industry. Historically, I would say that critical circles have been pretty progressive and welcoming of talented women.

The Blueprint 3 ***** all over Beyonces discography with a nice chunk of DCs discography as well.
