Exactly. Death, unemployment, and divorce are all things you can drown out with company, and eventually heal/fix within a year or so. Babies are a responsibility that never ends, and for many it can feel like a burden at times. The depression comes from the lack of feeling in-touch with your previous social/personal standing, since your entire being is now dedicated to a child.

This is probably why so many children are neglected, as well. Not necessarily because the baby has done anything wrong, but rather because the parents can't deal with the never ending neediness.
Many couples are up to the challenge though, and babies are welcomed be additions to the family. If you're ready and mentally/financially capable of raising a child, it's a beautiful experience.
