PEMBROKE PINES (CBSMiami) — An investigation is underway after a dog was found dead in Pembroke Pines with a note attached to its body which said “We beat it to death! lol! (evil smiley face). HAHAHA!”
The 13-year old Pomeranian named Foxx had been in Verline Bartheleny’s family for 13 years, and lived with her and her life mate, Ronald Boisvert, for the last eight years.
The family pet was taken to Saint Francis Animal Hospital where a veterinarian’s exam found it had multiple fractures. Dr. Ron Ridge says Fox had 10 broken ribs, missing teeth and a broken back. The vet says Fox was likely kicked to death.
Pembroke Pines Police said they are taking the case very seriously, particularly considering the disturbing, taunting nature of the note left on the dead dog’s body.
“The fact that they left a note, and the kind of note, it’s alarming,” said police Major Carlos Bermudez.
Bartheleny said she cannot avoid the reality that she is black and her life mate, the father of their 4-year-old son, is white.
“It’s a biracial relationship. Maybe that’s why they did that to Foxx,” she said, adding that the dogs killing could be a hate crime.
Police declined to speculate as to motive in the dog’s death.
