Alphabet is just container for Google and other companies.
Alphabet with all of it's holdings would be bigger than Google.
This way it makes it easier to structure, allocate and track resources and of course buy and sell of holdings.
If Google owns a company, then they have to deal with the day to day of that company, they won't have to anymore because Alphabet will do that now. Leaving Google to do what Google does best.
If Google wants to sell Nest they would have to do all the financials for the deal, news would be Google selling Nest... Now it would be Alphabet selling Nest, Google would be out of the picture.
