Carrie is bigger in the U.S mainly because of country music. Kelly is bigger WW because of pop being a global genre. However, career wise, I believe Kelly is the bigger artist.
1. Kelly has more than 90 Billboard #1s, 3 #1s on the all genre Hot 100, and numerous #1s around the world including South Korea, the UK, and Australia.
2. Kelly has represented American Idol all over the world numerous times (World Idol, Pop Idol, Swedish Idol, Canadian Idol, and Australian Idol. I think she might have been on German Idol once, but not sure. She's also been on X-Factor and The Voice in different countries.
3. Kelly always had disputes with her label, especially with Clive. Carrie never had to deal with any of that. Kelly's dispute with her label made her into a stronger artist and received respects from her peers when she stood up for herself to Clive. I like that Kelly had to fight for what she believed in and that just speaks how hard she worked in her career. I think had the MD era was not sabotaged, she would be in a better place today perhaps with sales and award accolades. Still, she fought for her vision and to me, that makes her the bigger artist. I love Carrie and I enjoy her music, but I feel like she had her music career handed to her on a silver platter. Which brings me to my final point...
4. If it wasn't for Kelly winning American Idol and bringing credibility to the show, I don't think Carrie would not have the career she has today.
In the end, it's an apple and orange situation. Both have achieved so much in their career that most Idol, The Voice, and X-Factor winners dream of. It's just a matter of facts that show Kelly is the bigger artist and probably will be in the long run.

Carries career wasn't handed to her tho.
Do you understand how hard it is for women to break the country music scene? A lot of women try and maybe will have a moderate hit and then fade into obscurity.
There are only like 4 women that are huge in the country industry right now and 2 of them are in a group with men.
It was up to Carrie to make the right moves and releases and to promote to make a career for herself. She could have simply released JTTW and then faded like the rest tbh.
In a genre taken up with mostly all men it;s hard for the women hence why when someone comes around like Carrie & Miranda who have lasted as long as they have with bro country being a thing - thats why they are praised.
