He didn't think it would go down better. I think you've mis-understood the story. lol. If anything, he seemed to think it would go down worse, that was the whole point in trying to make up that fake story, so that it would distract people from the real story.

He thought it would be far more SHOCKING than him having an affair with a female politician. And let's be honest, it would've been more shocking as he's a Republican. The idea was that the fake gay story would over-shadow the real story. Then later on he was probably planning to prove it was fake and hope that all the commotion would make people not notice his real affair.

I can already imagine it: an OBVIOUSLY fake/edited photo of a Grindr "conversation" between him and some guys. Then he defends himself and points to how fake the photo looks and voila, the gay story was just slander
