She has a good point though. I wonder what would happen if they chose to add "American" on the census reports? How many people would just simply indentify as that, and not whatever race they are? I have a lot of friends who find it annoying because they're so multiracial, and sometimes it only lets you pick 1 box. Lol. I mean, people should be able to identify as whatever they want.

When people are saying things like "White people see blacks as lesser citizens," white Pov is relevant to the discussion since white PoV is literally the topic being discussed. It's also worth noting that, while white people are not labeled as the ones suffering from institutional racism (which actually wasn't even what I was talking about), whites ARE accused of being responsible for it, therefore they are still directly part of their discussion and, yes, their point of view is valid (but even beyond that, the point of view of any human being is valid. You can completely disagree, but they deserve the right to voice said opinion and have actual counterarguments made) You have not disproven a single thing I said, simply dismissed it on my race. On the other hand, if you made legitimate arguments like someone else I was speaking to did (after my comments, they pointed out how different racial attitudes in different parts of the U.S. are, something I had not thought of when I made that post) in a respectful, rational, non-dismissive way, I am more than happy to admit I was wrong.

But no, I am not going to give you all a pass for being racist and doing things to white people that you would DRAG a white person to the pits for if they tried to pull it on a black person. But please, keep dismissing my point of view because "whites PoV's are invalid." You literally only prove the case more. You can't dismiss a PoV on race, regardless of if the person is Black, Latino, Asian, White, or ANY other race, without performing an act of racism. You are absolutely discriminating on race, that is absolutely racism. Period.

Dismissing other people on their race also does the group dismissing them a great deal of disservice, since it typically causes the dismissed group to turn around and dismiss what the FIRST group who dismissed them said.

This can be applied to any race, and #2 is exactly what is being done. You're telling me my point of view is invalid on nothing but race. ANyways, back to the main point of this thread, Raven was completely in the right with this and actually doing something VERY racially progressive by attempting to break down barriers between blacks and whites and promote unification and acceptance, and pointing out that she is JUST as much of an "American" as anyone of any other race

This! It's so silly to think people can't be racist toward white people. Racism is racism.

I think Raven's articulation is what got her into such controversy. I do think her point is extremely valid though. Why are white people called just "American" while every other race has an added suffix?

I don't see anything wrong with what she said. Many black people feel this way. Of course some do not, but this isn't a new concept or feeling.

If they know or identify with their ancestors, its the ones who lived in America. Same with how white people who's families have been here for centuries don't identify with their European heritage.

She's right, it's stupid that a white person who's family's been here since the 50's or even later can just be called an American, but a black person who's family has been here for 400 years has to be called African American.

people should feel free to identify and label themselves how they please tbh. if she feels she is more "american" than "african american" then why judge? it's not like she hates african americans. and why can't people just identify themselves as "american"? everyone in america (besides natives) have immigrated from another country, or have parents/ancestors who have. it's not like "american" is synonymous with "white people".

This is only even an issue because Americans are generally SUPER IGNORANT when it comes to separating race and nationality. It's actually kind of scary. Don't even get me started on how the majority think "Latinos" are a race...

My nationality is AMERICAN; un-hyphenated, pure American. My race however is black. They are not the same, and calling all blacks"African American" makes about as much sense as calling all whites "European Americans". As in it makes no sense.
