It would have to be full of Circle the Drains, WAILFs, ETs, and Dark Horses.
Musically, yeah, she's done darker stuff before well, but image wise It could be hard simply because she can't resist bubbly youthful imagery in her visuals. But if she wanted to, I'm sure she could get her mind set on it and pull it off.

I thought she was gonna do a dark era when she burned her Teenage Dream wig in that promo video
I'm not sure if she would ever do such a thing, but I would love to see her cross into a darker and more introspective territory with her music. Her version of Rated R would be great.

Honestly I think she was just confused in her direction at the start of the era. She didn't want to do bright hot pink sugar-high visuals like TD, I'm sure she wanted to tone it down a bit so she tried to be edgier with her wardrobe, hair, visuals but then the era started in earnest and pretty soon we got things like this:
She changed her mind, I guess. Plus the whole edgy thing doesn't mesh well with the prismatic, i-love-life thing she was trying to push.
I'm not sure how it would do commercially (at least the same amount of success Rated R had) but it would definitely be a great era musically and visually.

No offense, but that looks like a Halloween costume for Mom's when they take their kids trick or treating
