It's just so frightening because sometimes it's hard to understand what the person is saying...

It mainly goes like this

Me: Good morning/afternoon (insert name of place)
Them: Hi can I talk to blah blah blah
Me: Can I take a name/who's calling?
Them: Blah blah blah

And sometimes they'll have a name that I can't pronounce or the line will be bad and I'll mishear them and have to ask again, then they repeat and I still don't understand and I get so anxious and worried.

Me: Okay hold on a moment *transfers to solicitor*
Solicitor: Hello
Me: There's a blah blah blah on the line
Solicitor: Oh okay, thank you.

Phew.

When I did work experience I had to do the same thing, and once my boss was on a personal phone call and I thought that I transferred the call I was on to someone else and somehow I joined in the call my boss was on and she got SO MAD. I'll never work in an office again.

When I started my position as a receptionist at a travel agency, I was really worried every time I picked up the phone. Not only was it hard to understand people at times, but there were a lot of corporate people that would call and use language/terms that I didn't understand, since I haven't taken any full travel courses, yet. I felt really dumb explaining to them that I didn't understand their request, but after a while I started to become more use to everything that was involved.

You just have to remember that you're who the other person WANTS to talk to. They'll feel comfortable knowing that you are ensuring that you understand their request/name properly- that's better than handing them off to the wrong person. Plus, once you become more comfortable within the office environment, answering the phone will start becoming really natural, since you'll feel at "home" and like those calls belong to you. If that makes sense?

I was like 'Sarah, there's a caller from accounting for you ' and my boss was like 'IT'S JOSIE, GET OFF THIS LINE NOW' ffff

If you're on a trial run with this job, then it's probably actually a good thing that you're so careful with how you present yourself while answering the phone. The fact that you recognize that you have to fully understand names and information before passing the phone will be appreciated by your employer, as oppose to someone that just tries to get the call from one line to another as quickly as possible. They pick up on details like that!
