If anything, your suggestions are pretentious.
First, his marketing team is right. There's no way Desrouleaux would work as a pop star for the average American. Scherzinger? Second, his voice is definitely better than the average pop star and performing/dancing is his strength, which is why he's a judge on So You Can Think You Can Dance and known for his dancing. He's doing WAY better than people thought he would doing years ago. He's survived while all of his 2009 peers have all disappeared.
As for Jessie, singer-songwriters aren't in right now and she's always been a pop singer. And she definitely would have disappeared had she not done a few generic pop songs like Domino.
