Hm tough one. I don't know because here in Europe Shakira is a queen and if you put the first notes of Whenever, Wherever i'm sure everyone would recognize it but I can say the same about BOMT tbh.

Its a classic that you can still hear literally whenever and wherever you are.
When people listen to BOMT they be like "omggggg this song is soo old, its been years, my childhood", etc.
From a US native perspective, BOMT. I think Whenever, Wherever is the better song tho, but other things contribute to BOMT's lingering like the video/costumes getting referenced repeatedly.
...Baby One More Time obviously I still hear it all the time and it's always on TV unlike the other one (I live in Europe)
It also sold more, went #1 in every country it charted in, is actually massively iconic, referenced in pop culture all the time, has more plays on Spotify despite being the older song etc.
