After being appointed creative director of Balenciaga in 2012, Alexander Wang’s tenure at the house is seemingly coming to an end. According to a report published today, Kering, Balenciaga’s parent company, has decided not to renew Wang’s contract, resulting in his Spring 2016 show being his last for the storied house.
Rumors of Wang’s and Kering’s contract negotiations have persisted for several months, though the final decision as to why the parties decided to part ways is not immediately clear. During his time at Balenciaga, Wang helped to grow the business in the double digits, as well as expand the house’s retail space to more than 90 brick-and-mortar stores and shop-in-shops. His minimalist, cool take on the Balenciaga codes have found him fans in Hollywood—Carey Mulligan, Julianne Moore, Lady Gaga, and Sienna Miller are all repeat wearers—and his new accessories launches, including the Cable tote and Le Dix bags, have helped increase the brand’s visibility in that arena. It’s been widely reported that Wang is looking for an investor for his privately held Alexander Wang brand, perhaps causing him to reevaluate his current role at Balenciaga.
Wang’s departure is not the only change Balenciaga faces. On Monday, former Unilever executive vice president of global skincare Grita Loebsack was promoted to CEO of luxury couture and leather goods' emerging brands at Kering. Balenciaga CEO Isabelle Guichot will report to Loebsack when she assumes her role in September. Balenciaga staffers also have an impending move on the horizon—the brand will relocate more than 200 of its employees, including the design team, to Kering’s new headquarters on the Left Bank, near Balenciaga’s showroom on rue Cassette.
While Kering has not officially confirmed Wang’s departure, it is said that the search for his replacement has already begun. Citing Alessandro Michele’s critical and financial successes at Kering-owned Gucci, a source reports that the corporation is open to hiring an unknown designer at Balenciaga.
He got fired, well to put it politely they didn't renew his contract. He could never fill the shoes Nicholas Ghesquiere left.
It's their fault tho, like Wang has never done couture,before his appointment in Balenciaga. He's more of a RTW street-style designer like he sells black neoprene sweaters and sweatpants
Now that Ghesquiere is on LV, i wonder who will replace Wang.
