Our neighbor nearly set the apartment on fire before (my mom had to call 911 before she went to work because the stairwell was full of smoke). Turns out he had forgotten to turn off the stove and a pan was still on it. Like, they probably would've died if my mom hadn't called it in. Asshole.
I believe that both lives are important, nonetheless, if I were to save only one then it would be the neighbor (even if I absolutely loathe him and sees him as Satan himself). I just can't let a fellow human being die knowing I could save them, the tremendous guilt and regret would kill me. The only time I would pick the animal over the neighbor would be if they were truly a lost cause, the guilt would still be unbearable but if there's nothing or anyone can do then I'm sorry.
Although in real life, I'm not brave enough to save either one.
