Discussion: Black Children in U.S. More Likely to Live in Poverty

About 38.3 percent of black children lived in poverty in 2013, nearly four times the rate for white children, at 10.7 percent. About 30.4 percent of Hispanic children and 10.1 percent of Asian children live in poverty.

For the first time since the federal government started collecting the data, the number of black children in poverty appears to have overtaken the number of poor white children, even though white children far outnumber black children in the American population, the report said. About 4.2 million black children were living in poverty in 2013, compared with 4.1 million white children, though researchers said the difference was not statistically significant.

This is from years and years of biased housing and lack of proper education. It's going to take a long time to fix this

Fixing the educational system. The US has such a terrible system for funding education -- poorer areas generate less money from property taxes, so public schools in these areas suffer, so children who live in poverty are less likely to have the tools to escape it. It's a vicious cycle, and the power$ that be don't address it efficiently. Decades of racist practices like redlining created this.

a lot of my FB friends (females from middle school) get pregnant freshman year and end up dropping out and support their child(ren) and the places that are the least expensive to live in are usually the lower income areas etc

This goes ALL the way back to the GI Bill after the war in which white families were basically given a head start in owning property while black families were moved into highrises and apartment complexes.

We? You're not even American. There's no reason for you to feel guilty, defensive and in denial for something that happened in the past. The GI bill, housing segregation, white flight and other acts did create setbacks and obstacles for black communities. You literally just named public housing projects that have had failures, they were and are not the greatest places. You sound like you're painting them to be so grand.

I mean this is taught in history classes and as ATRL's avid fact checker you should know that... but you're not American after all so use the internet.

They were grand, until people moved in and ruined them

if it weren't for people trashing the apartments and committing crimes, they would be great places to live. The same would have happened to any place, be it a suburb or a palace.
