What would you do if your friend(s) is homophobic?
Earlier today, my friend (he's a queen, and still act straight ) saw a bunch of butch lesbian in a restaurant he's working at. He texted me "Ew, bunch of "the d word" here, disgusting, tryna be a boy, wear your hijab GIRLS."
I was literally -ing whilst reading it, he knows my cousin is butch then after that, he texted me, "Sorry, I forgot about your cousin."
Have you ever been in this situation before? What did you do?
You know exactly what you should say and do, especially since his insulting your own cousin too! Don't tolerate this behavior from this hypocritical, bitchy queen!
There's a number of issues here. Not only was his statement homophobic and sexist, he doesn't respect himself, others, or you.
Address it head on, tell them how you feel, and maintain a healthy distance. The company you keep with you speaks volumes about who you are as a person.
A close friend of mine think he's in the closet to his family, but due to his flamboyant behavior, people always ask him about his sexuality. Because of the years of bullying, he deals with it by denying his sexuality and telling people he's straight or that he's going through a phase. He's said disrespectful things about LGBT people, yet he continues to have sex with LOTS of men that he meets at bathhouses and Grindr. I've spoken to him about his behavior and have drawn the line/boundaries and he knows better than to say anymore immature and disrespectful stuff. He lives in a different state now and the distance has been great for our friendship.
Call the friend out and tell them (in the most "respectful," clear way possible) what you think of what was said. It'll basically come down to the friend realizing how offensive/hurtful/ignorant he was and trying to change (unlikely, but I think everyone deserves this chance) or he... won't, in which case it might be best to end the friendship (actually, forget the might, just end it)
I guess you could end it now too, but I think confronting is probably better. At least to see if he can start being more respectful (I don't expect everyone to bend over and agree with gays on a moral level if they're in a religion that says otherwise or something, but I DO expect them to show gay people respect and not treat them any different than any other human being)
