Those words inherit their pronunciations from the language they evolved from (latin), and are thus bad examples.

Every word that starts with G, then a vowel, then an F, is pronounced with a hard G. For example:
Gaffe. Gift. Guff. Guffaw.

Most one-syllable words that start with G have a hard G (not an exhaustive list):
Gab. Gad. Gag. Gal. Gam. Gap. Gas. Gay. Get. Gig. Gill. Gimp. Gird. Girl. Git! Give. Go. Goal. Gob. God. Gone. Gore. Got. Guide. Guild. Guilt. Gull. Gulp. Gum. Gun. Gust. Gut. Guy.

It's just the most logical way to pronounce it

I can't believe there are people still insisting it's Gif(t). It's not. Get over it. It doesn't even sound right.

This is a word that was created by someone in 1980. It's similar to if you create a brand. It could be wrote as "ceen" and you pronounce that as "seen". Some people will say it with a "k" or "c" sound, but the decision is up to you because you branded it. There is no right or wrong way to say "gif", that is up for the creator to decide.

I HATE people that don't pronounce gif (said "jif)," correctly. It's been settled by the English alphabet and the creator of the file format. STAHP trying to push "gef" on us.

He created Graphics Interchange Format. He has no say on how to pronounce the abbreviation.

And people can miss me with that "It's Graphics Interchange Format therefore it should be pronounced with a Long G instead of a short G" We're talking about acronyms, so everything doesn't really have to be Technical. I, and many others, along with the creator of this format will continue to pronounce it the right way while others try to force their way of speaking on us.

Of course he does. With that he created the abbreviation, and he said the abbreviation is pronounced as "jiff". If you want to pronounce it with a hard G, you have every right to, but you're wrong.

As someone else said, it's like when someone creates a brand name. They decide how it's pronounced.

No, many of us know what it stands for, we're not being overly technical with how we're pronouncing it. It's an acronym ffs.

Technically, each letter should be pronounced separately as it's an acronym... like PNG. Just because it resembles a word that can be pronounced, doesn't mean it should be pronounced as such.
